William Thorell, MD, was awarded the Lyal G. Leibrock, MD Chair of Neurosurgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center on March 25. Dr. Thorell graduated with highest distinction from the UNMC College of Medicine in 1966. He did his internship and residency in neurosurgery at UNMC and a two-year fellowship in endovascular surgical neuroradiology at the Cleveland Clinic. In 2004 he joined the UNMC faculty as assistant professor, and in 2011 he became associate professor.
The endowed chair honors Dr. Leibrock, a well-known neurosurgeon who served on the UNMC faculty from 1978 to 2005 and was neurosurgery section chief for 17 years. Dr. Leibrock died in 2005.
Dr. Thorell said, “As someone who trained under Dr. Leibrock, I’m truly honored. Loyal was so unique. There was no one like him. Our personas were alike. I see the world very similar to the way Lyal saw the world.”
Dr. Thorell has been active in the development of the Nebraska Stroke Center, an interdisciplinary stroke team at Nebraska Medicine and the first nationally certified stroke center in Nebraska.
