During its annual meeting, the Nebraska Stroke Association presented the inaugural NSA Stephanie Wever Courage Award on June 24 to Keith Fickenscher of Lincoln. The annual award recognizes a survivor who exemplifies courage in overcoming the effects of stroke.

Stephanie Wever, a stroke survivor and former NSA board member, died December 25, 2015, at age 32. She was dedicated to raising awareness of strokes and her rare gene defect, ACTA2. Four generations of her family attended the award ceremony.

Fickenscher is an NSA board member, a stroke survivor, a former hospital administrator, and a public speaker who shares his professional and personal experiences with medical personnel, stroke survivors, and the general public.
